Flickr ha lanciato un nuovo servizio chiamato Flickr Stats disponibile per tutti i possessori di accounts pro

Per attivarlo bisogna accedere alla pagina www.flickr.com/photos/[NOMEUTENTE]/stats ed attendere minimo 24 ore.

Today I woke up a few minutes before sunrise. I went to my window with a cup of coffee and nearly spilled some while grabbing the camera because I was watching live the very first sun ray wielding life to the valley.

Nokia N95 8GB vs Canon Powershot G7

Want to use your Nokia 8GB as a camera? I decided to compare the two to see if the Nokia really can replace a camera and in which conditions.
Notice that the Canon PowerShot G7 is capable of 10MPixel but I locked it to 6MP and reduced jpg compression.

Volete usare il Nokia 8GB come una camera digitale? Ho deciso di mettere a confronto i due per vedere se il Ninja può rimpiazzare una fotocamera digitale e soprattutto in quali condizioni.
Notate che la G7 è capace di ben 10MPixel e per il test ho impostato una risoluzione di 6MPixel e ridotto al minimo la compressione jpeg.

Da notare che in questa foto si ha un arcobaleno di colori dal rosso al blu. Con foto di questo tipo le macchine digitali più economiche hanno estreme difficoltà a copiare le variazioni di colore per via della compressione jpeg: foto di questo tipo sono di solito tra le più grosse in termini di kb. Posso testimoniare che i colori della G7 sono fedeli al 100%, erba e cielo compresi (merito dello splendido tempo della Liguria ). PSono rimasto sorpreso dal colore marrone dei rami del caco (la pianta con le foglie rosse sulla sinistra); ci sono zone sovraesposte ma il marrone viene mantenuto dove possibile. Decisamente niente male. Anche l’erba è venuta bene. La compressione jpeg è eccessiva, purtroppo: pensate che la Canon ha creato un file da 3800kb mentre il ninja si ferma a 1700kb. Lo si nota moltissimo zoomando al 100% ed osservando il cielo che compare rumoroso. Notevole però la definizione lungo i contorni delle foglie. Con una passata su photoshop e NeatImage questa foto potrebbe essere perfetta.

Qui volevo valutare la capacità del nokia di mettere a fuoco un oggetto chiaro su sfondo scuro e soprattutto un oggetto non distante omogeneamente dall’obiettivo. Mi sono spinto molto più vicino con la Canon mentre con il ninja ho dovuto indietreggiare qualche centimetro per ottenere la messa a fuoco. Se aprite la foto su Flickr noterete una nota in cui ho evidenziato la zona che il nokia ha messo a fuoco. Questa zona corrisponde alla parte più sporgente del fiore, la parte più vicina all’obiettivo, sengo che il nokia ha correttamente interpretato la messa a fuoco. E’ chiaramente una situazione limite: per fare questa foto avrei dovuto allontanarmi qualche centimetro in più… ma volevo valutare la DoF (profondità di campo) della lente che chiaramente è limitata. Personalmente sono rimasto ugualmente sorpreso!

Anche qua volevo valutare la DoF (profondità di campo). Scatto difficile per via della luce solare che arriva dal lato della camera. Osservate intanto che la presenza di tanta luce fa sballare la regolazione del colore infatti tutta la foto ha una dominanza gialla. Simili situazioni sono da evitare col ninja anche se tutta la foto è perfettamente a fuoco.

Qui il ninja non riusciva ad inquadrare a causa della pesante sovraesposizione. Avevo in pratica il sole dietro il pino nano, soggetto della foto. Per aiutarlo ho schermato i raggi del sole di mezzogiorno con la mano (potete vedere un dito nella parte alta della foto ): in questo modo il telefono ha un indubbio vantaggio sulla Canon. Molti particolari vengono persi: basta osservare la foto al 100% per rendersene conto.
Questo ad ulteriore dimostrazione che i cameraphone non sono adatti a fare foto in controluce.

Questa volta il sole è alle spalle. Volevo proprio vedere come il ninja avrebbe reso il rosmarino, un vero incubo per un cameraphone . Pensate che questa foto del Ninja è da ben 1800kb (contro 4450 della G7).
Si nota una pesante dominanza cromatica, direi ancora verso il giallo…

Questo è un test a mezz’ombra. Volevo valutare l’esposizione automatica di questo telefono ed ho pensato che l’ideale fosse una foto a mezz’ombra. In questo caso credo che l’esposimetro fosse regolato su center weighted, e direi che si comporta in modo esemplare (come del resto nelle altre foto).

Questa foto è abbastanza stupefacente. Vi ricordate il test macro ravvicinata? Questa l’ho fatta stando un pelino più lontano, sempre con un soggetto molto luminoso. I colori sono sballati, ma la messa a fuoco è praticamente perfetta su tutto il fiore. Basta correggere questa dominante cromatica per avere una bellissima macro.

Un po’ di respiro per il telefono. Macro uniformemente illuminata e senza eccessi di luce. Mi sono dovuto allontanare un poco rispetto alla G7 per ottenere la messa a fuoco, ma il ninja si è comportato molto bene (sempre escludendo la dominante cromatica).

I finally made it to Flickr Explore, the most prestigious prize one could get. A friend of mine alerted me that this picture was there on 10/19/2007.

The secret?
- shoot a good picture
- no more than 5 groups at a time
- a lot of contacts with good reputation (possibly contacts which have been on Explore too)
- a smart tagging
- an entertaining text

Here is the text I wrote for the occasion:
In Sweden students go to University riding a bike or just walking. For those unfortunate without a bike (or more precisely incapable of finding a good deal in a short time) like me this implies a fair share of walking! The balance is the possibility to admire something like this, of course!
This was shot during my usual walk from my gf place to the library; the possibility to cut through forests on my way to the city centre never stops astonishing me.

Since this little peace of paradise is surrounded by palaces I cut out most of the original picture (compliments of 10MP cameras!!!) and decided to enhance the shot with HDR and Orton: they usually give fantastic results with this kind of pictures.

Tecniques for the digital photographer

This is intended to be a list of sites with guides for digital pictures editing. These guides usually require Photoshop and a camera with manual settings and naturally they are all in english.
This post will take a big effort of mine: I don’t mean to make my own tutorial but for each method I’ll find I’ll post the original poses and the results I’ll get.

This is the first I tried.
I took three shots of the same picture varying exposition with image blanketing and aperture priority.

I used first Photoshop CS3 and then Photomatrix.
Photoshop took a big deal of time, more than 10 minutes and got me this result:

Photomatrix did the same in a couple of minutes and got me this:

My impression is that photoshop must be controlled better during the conversion 32->8bit per channel as the results are not worth the time spent for the merging.

Two more tests. Now things start getting interesting!

sunset on air

Yesterday there was a spectacular sunset on air over my house.

Such sunsets are possible only uphill like where I live. The sun sets much sooner than at sea which means the colours are more gold like. At sea the sunset would be red and on fire instead.
I’m trying to set something up in order to make the silhouette more interesting: if you have anything to suggest I would love to try it because I get such sunsets at least once every week during fall season.

As you know Flickr has many limits for not PRO users. With the aid of FlickLeech I copied and pasted all my pictures on this page, so that I’ll always be able to recover my images. Pity this doesn’t work with protected pictures.

Day at Cinque terre and love path

This time I went to Cinque Terre with my girlfriend and since she is not lazy at all we made the whole path from Monterosso to Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. For the last time I was in Riomaggiore follow this link: –> link

How lovely is that? 18 people, most of them with a scientific degree joined in purpose to produce the most perfect night on the beach ever done.
I’ve rarely seen such efficiency in Italy, really nicely done fellas!

I announce (and with a fair share of pride) that I was the fire maker. I just love taking care of fires and their hypnotic light, especially when the sight is enhanced by gnammy sausages. Before filling bread with those they were put in a pot with lemon and spices: never tasted anything so nice and filling. Good job girls!

Naturally I couldn’t help myself from taking a shot to the moon, but this time I think I did a fair good job…
