MacWorld 2008: le novità

Si è concluso il MW2008 e quest’anno devo dire di essere rimasto abbastanza deluso.

Apple si è concentrata sulla wireless digital home:

1. - un hardisk che fornisce un servizio di backup centralizzato per tutta la casa attraverso un HD da 0.5 o 1 TB integrato, ovviamente connesso con tecnologia WiFi-n e complemento ideale per TimeMachine di Leopard
2. - una rinnovata Apple TV con un nuovo servizio di video rental da iTunes
3. - un portatile chiamato MacBook Air invero interessantissimo e rivoluzionario…

E’ probabilmente mancata la stoccata dell’anno scorso con l’iPhone

Voglio dire: l’anno scorso la gente è tornata a casa con la sensazione di aver visto qualcosa di veramente nuovo e alla portata di tutti, mentre quest’anno si domanderà se veramente un MacBook Air farebbe comodo nel proprio appartamento.

Parliamo un secondo del MacBook Air però:

Sottilissimo, potente e carente; lo riassumo così.

Quando dico che è sottile intendo VERAMENTE sottile: non è mai esistito un portatile così sottile, tanto che questo farà serissima concorrenza agli UMPC. Il prezzo di base, 1699€, comprende un HD da 80GB e per avere la memoria solida da 67GB occorre spendere ben 2868€
Niente drive ottico (lo si acquista separatamente per 90$ e si collega via USB, autoalimentato); niente LAN (si usa un adattatore USB) ma ovviamente WLAN 802.11n (mimo compatibile, quindi). Schermo LED da 13.5”, tastiera identica a quella del MacBook ma retrolluminata.

Presente webcam, microfono e speaker, una (sola) porta USB e una uscita video.

Novità interessante (che presto immagino verrà applicata anche agli altri Laptops di Cupertino) è la presenza della tecnologia Multitouch per il TouchPad. Si potranno ruotare e zoomare le foto usando due dita o passare alla foto successiva usando tre dita.

Se fosse necessario usare un CD (tipo per aggiornare l’SO o per installare Office) si potrà semplicemente inserire il CD su un PC o un MAC con su installato iTunes ultima versione e automaticamente sarà possibile montare il CD anche sul MacBook air.

E’ chiaro che con 80GB di storage non si potrà archiviare molta roba ed è quindi necessaria una soluzione NAS (come minimo) o comunque un computer centrale sempre acceso per usare attivamente questo sistema in casa, ma non è questo l’ambiente ideale per il MacBook Air.

Immaginate cosa significa poter portarsi dietro un Laptop che pesa 1.6kg ( ), è spesso quanto un dito e dura 5 ore con la batteria! Significa in pratica libertà assoluta di potrarselo dietro in tutte le situazioni possibili ed immaginabili, senza limiti. Anche il cinema diventa un posto in cui si può portare il portatile perché è incredibilmente piccolo e leggero! Non è però un desktop replacement, assolutamente no.

Per il prezzo che costa si può portare a casa un MacBook Pro (100€ in più) e sinceramente devo dire che questo oggettino non mi interessa, ma magari interesserà a voi…

un italiano con l’iPhone

Certe persone hanno tutte le fortune. Un mio amico si è trovato a Miami Beach nei giorni della presentazione dell’iPhone ed essendo un Mac-addict non poteva certo esimersi dal fare una visitina all’Apple Store e girare un bel video con la sua Canon IXUS. E’ stato persino così gentile da darmi il permesso di pubblicare il link al video ed alle foto davanti allo store. Buona visione.

Apple iPhone released (and looking good too)

Oh man, here we go. Another rumor about that 3G European iPhone. This time, the source is Guy Kewney of Newswireless who, until recently, doubled as eWeek.com’s European wireless editor — i.e., he’s the real deal. As the story goes, Apple is set to announce a four-way deal: Vodafone and T-Mobile on the carrier front with Carphone Warehouse out in front as the MVNO. Hmmm, well, this kind of deal would certainly provide Apple’s upstart mobile phone with far broader coverage than a Vodafone exclusive could muster while providing a solid brick-and-mortar base on a continent (mostly) void of Apple stores. Best of all for Europeans, the announcement expected on Monday will be 3G. That’s right, while you’re queuing up for EDGE data, Europeans might be unwrapping an HSDPA iPhone in a 4-way press release. Here’s the rub, bub: do you really think Apple will provide Europe a 3G iPhone before the end of the year and not release it in the US at the same time? Now the tough choice: stand in line for your 2.5G iPhone or wait and see what happens on Monday with this rumor (and we repeat, it’s just rumor at this point). Decisions, decisions.
